Nucleus RadioPharma

Nucleus Radiopharma approached Ampersand with a challenge to create an innovative solution for delivering a new breed of therapeutic treatments using nuclear medicine. Traditional equipment does not satisfy both the radiation safety and infusion performance requirements simultaneously. This forces the clinical teams to create their own infusion solutions with existing supplies, resulting in inconsistent, excessive radiation exposure and poor clinician and patient experience.

The “Ask”: “Can you design something that is innovative that solves the infusion challenge of Theranostic radiopharmaceutical therapies?”

Problem

There is currently no fit-for-purpose solution for safely administering theranostic infusions.

Current solutions have limited adoption due to:

  • High capital cost
  • Unfamiliar operation
  • Significant training requirements
  • Poor workflow

Insight

The industry treated this as an electronics and software problem — requiring a new “smart” infusion pump with dedicated hardware to manage dose and safety.

Ampersand reframed it as a mechanical energy-transfer problem: the existing infusion pump already on hand could supply the energy needed, removing the need for new powered hardware entirely.

Solution

Ampersand developed a fully passive system (no electronics, no software) that:

  • Uses existing infusion pumps as the energy source
  • Incorporates a standardized, intuitive workflow
  • Utilizes a single-patient-use disposable that fits existing reimbursement codes/limits

The simplified device also allowed for lower development budgets and timeline for the company sponsor.

“Ampersand has been the perfect partner to work on this very strategic project for Nucleus Radiopharma. I am impressed with how quickly the Ampersand team understood the problem statement and executed a very mature solution!”
